News Boy

Times they are a changing.

The news criers are still around, only now it is called social media, and everybody is yelling about the news that is important to them.

“The state of the publishing industry is reflected in all other delivery methods of media. Everything from “snail mail” to TV and DVD, nothing will escape the gravity of the internet. ” — Jarvis Latteier

If you are still getting your news from a newspaper or any other printed source it’s to old to be useful. I hate to tell you this, but that periodical also probably wont do well on the web either. The market that they are entering now is already over saturated and they’re new potential readership have never had a subscription to any newspaper. That concept  / format is foreign and unappealing. Odds are your favorite newspaper wont have the vision to change enough to regain or even keep their readership.

In 5 years any news based periodical will go the way of the CD and DVD. Blogs, Micro-Blogs Tweets and their ilk are here to stay. Just like CDs and DVDs everything is going digital. The internet is changing everything we consume and the way we consume it.

One way to look at is like a bank run. Everyone is pulling the money out of print and putting it under the web “mattress”. Ad prices are relatively cheap for the potential exposure and your message can be very effectively target marketed. The reality, the internet is where the buyers are. The muscle of our economy exists in the age range of 10 to 35 and they LIVE on the internet.

Print media is not the only delivery method being affected. After the Internet what was one of the first things that changed our daily lives? The way we communicate, eMail. What reason is there for sending something via post after everybody has the internet? What changed next is how we socialize the way we spend our time. The majority of that time in the age range of 10 to 35 is spent socializing on the Internet. Thats where the marketing dollars have gone.

It’s time to embrace the change. there is no stopping this train and no one is getting off.

The following is a wonderful take on the topic from DK Publishing.
Watch it from start to finish, its got a twist.

It is a play on an older video but I think the concept works nicely here.
